Why franchise with Mathnasium?
Most of our franchisees tell us that an important factor for them in choosing Mathnasium is the nature of the work. They want a personally fulfilling venture as well as a financial opportunity. They want to enjoy what they do and they want to look forward to going to work every day.
Additionally, our franchisees want to own a business that makes a real difference. They work better when they are passionate about what they do. Also, Mathnasium franchisees have found fundamental flaws with other education franchisors, including one or more of the following: high initial fees, exorbitant royalties, huge investment costs, unfair territories, complicated business models and multiple subjects instead of our focused maths-only approach. These flaws can diminish results for the children, and diminish the value to their parents.
Mathnasium has the independent research that shows superior results from our teaching methodology, and we deliver these results every day. Mathnasium franchisees also tell us they care about the company and the franchisee community they are joining. They like being part of a franchisor/franchisee community of accomplished and caring individuals. Everyone from our franchisees to our executive team is in alignment: we all want to help children succeed in maths.
What is the Mathnasium Method?
The Mathnasium Method is the life’s work of Larry Martinek, Mathnasium’s Chief Instructional Officer and a maths teacher and education consultant for over 35 years. It’s the best there is: a time-tested, personalised programme that employs diagnostics, instruction, worksheets, and manipulatives to build number sense, and with it, confidence and a deep understanding, and lifelong love of mathematics. What does a student do at Mathnasium?
Mathnasium provides an appealing and welcoming environment where a student receives both instruction and practice. Each student works independently of other students, following a curriculum based precisely on the student’s individual needs. Teachers, who are rigorously trained in our materials and method, provide instruction, guidance and encouragement.
Why do parents enrol their children in Mathnasium?
Mathnasium is effective, affordable, and highly specialised. We get results. This has been proven repeatedly in independent studies. Parents receive periodic reports detailing their child’s progress. Students enjoy their workouts. Most importantly, they acquire number sense – the ability to think mathematically. We focus on building a solid foundation of skills, which maximises each student’s success in school, on standardised tests like the 11-plus and beyond. There is a wonderful side-benefit from this process: students’ boosted self-confidence.
What is a Mathnasium franchise?
A Mathnasium franchise enables you to own your own Mathnasium Learning Center in your community to help children from pre-K to pre-calculus boost their math skills. We teach you the business and grant you a license to use the Mathnasium name and Mathnasium business system, and we require you to implement the business system according to our standard of excellence. The system includes:
- An education system – so you know what to teach and how to teach
- A marketing system – to help you attract students to your center
- A financial system – for collecting fees, paying bills, financial reports, etc.
- An operations system – for daily management and administration
Can I open more than one centre?
Yes, this is a business model with the potential to scale to your ambitions, whatever they are. However, it’s crucial to get your first centre established and running smoothly before expanding into further sites.
Who do I need to be to succeed as a Mathnasium franchisee?
We are looking for people who will be a great fit with our system: people who care deeply about helping children reach their potential, and see business as a vehicle for realising their financial goals. Our franchisees are enthusiastic, highly motivated, persistent and achievement-oriented—people who want to enjoy what they do.
For some candidates, maths was not their favourite subject in school. For many it was. Some once considered teaching maths, but were concerned with the level of compensation or feared being undermined within a hierarchical, bureaucratic school environment. Others struggled with maths in school and have heightened sensitivity to the need to help children who are struggling.
All are people who believe in the power of education to change lives.
What will it cost me to open my first Mathnasium center?
As with any new business, costs can vary by location, marketing and other expenses, but as a guide the estimated total costs are around £85,000 to £140,000 (for central London).
What are the ongoing expenses of running a Mathnasium center?
Other than the royalties, expenses typically include:
- Monthly rent for a ground floor retail space in your community (approx. 1,200 to 1,600 square feet)
- Ongoing advertising and promotion
- Instructors, as enrollment grows (paid hourly during teaching times)
- Miscellaneous expenses, including phone, office supplies, and the like
Do I get an exclusive territory?
Yes. Each franchisee receives an exclusive territory designed so that they have an incentive to cooperate with one another and not compete for the same students. Your territory will be based on comprehensive demographic data highlighting the potential opportunity for your centre.
How much money will I make as a Mathnasium franchisee?
As with any business, it depends largely on your own effort – particularly important are the quality of service you provide, and whether you promote your centre moderately or aggressively. As a guide, you should be aiming to earn a six-figure income within three years. We will share potential returns and the financial model with you as part of the process of becoming a franchisee.
Do I have to teach children myself?
As a Mathnasium franchisee, you are only required to personally participate in the management and operation of your centre(s). However, our goal is to make you comfortable with overseeing all aspects of running the centre-including working with children. Any business operates better if you’re hands-on. Your plan will include hiring instructors on an as-needed basis as your enrolment increases, but you should be willing to invest your time and energy in all functions of the centre, including teaching as needed.
What are the typical hours of operation?
The hours may vary depending on your location, but most Mathnasium centres are open for instruction after school Monday until Thursday from about 3pm to 7pm, and some open on Saturday or Sunday too. A typical Mathnasium centre will be open five days a week for about 20 hours per week of instruction.
What type of training does Mathnasium provide?
You will start with 40 to 50 hours of online interactive training. This is done in the comfort of your home and will prepare you for Mathnasium’s one-week Initial Training programme in our UK Franchising Head Office, which includes both classroom and interactive training. Our comprehensive and proven franchisee education program will cover step-by-step use of the operations manual and all the areas important to your success as a franchise owner.
Most importantly, you will be trained and supported on an ongoing basis by our dedicated franchise support team who will be there when you need help. The cost of this initial training is included in your franchise fee. You will be responsible only for your travel expenses. Before opening your Mathnasium Learning Centre, you will also have the opportunity to take part in our Apprenticeship program where you will spend one week working hands on in one of our UK centres.
